Well, this album still has a few weeks until it comes out. It's leaked already, and I must say, it's quite good. It's a departure from the feel of Oracular Spectacular, as there is little to none electronic effects and the band sticks to a more traditional indie rock format. I find it quite enjoyable and I think you will too.

I never thought I would be able to get into Radiohead. Every time I began listening to an album I just got bored and couldn't really hold focus the way that I thought I would be able to. They get rave reviews and I just couldn't see what others saw in them. Then I listened to OK Computer. It blew my mind. I loved it so much I bought the limited edition vinyl. If you are like me and having trouble getting into Radiohead, enjoy this gem.

It's been a very long time since I posted. School has a tendency to distract. Over the period of time that I have been absent I've developed quite an interest in many different genres of music that I would have thought completely outlandish just one year ago. One thing that I have noticed throughout my travels and experiences is that great music bridges all gaps. Music has the unique power of bringing like peoples together, and this blog is my attempt to reach out to my friends and others.

I'm going to start this off with an album that has quickly turned out to be one of my ultimate favorites. This is a fantastic space rock concept album, it is incomparable, but the closet companion to the sound would probably be Hum.

The Killers - Sawdust

The Killers are a really cool band. They enjoyed a explosion of popularity with the release of their 2004 album, Hot Fuss, and while I enjoy the energetic pop sound of the album, I think that their later compilation and rarity release Sawdust is much, much better. My favorite track off this album is All The Pretty Faces, the guitar drives hard and the bass line is intense with it's rhythm. Brandon Flowers' vocal style is also very appealing. I hope you enjoy this more obscure side of a very popular band.

Ulver is an amazing group, although I must say I've never listened to the whole album in one sitting. Usually the only reason I have to listen to it is because I'll be stoned or something, and I fall asleep halfway through. That should tell you something about both the music and I. Ulver is very relaxing and interesting, and my choice for the letter U. I tend to think of Shadows of the Sun as somewhat of a masterpiece. Enjoy.

I love Portugal. The Man so they were my automatic choice for the letter P. Everything about the band is fun. The songs are groovy and the singer's voice is just so laid back while providing excellent accompaniment to the other instruments. The songs have enough variance to remain interesting and they mesh together into one perfect album. Okay, 'perfect' may be a stretch, but P.TM just may be my favorite band. Everybody should listen to this album.

Neutral Milk Hotel is my choice for the letter N. The songs are catchy, upbeat, and Jeff Magnum can sing. Quite a few people don't like this album, and I just don't understand. Maybe they've listened to it a few many times, maybe they hang around people who cite this as their 'indie cred', or maybe they are just so staunchly atheist that they can't stand the obviously joking line in "King of Carrot Flowers Pts.2&3". I don't know about them, but I do know that everyone should listen to this album at least once, regardless of what other people think about it. Enjoy.

The letter L doesn't have many choices, and I feel like a schmuck for posting a 'greatest hits' album, but I don't listen to many singer-songwriters and I don't really have the patience to delve through Leonard Cohen's vast discography. Cohen is a superbly talented musician and the music is sensitive and beautiful. Like I said, I don't really listen to many singer-songwriters so I don't really feel like I'm qualified to comment on Cohen's work. I personally feel that it is incredible, but I guess you must draw your own conclusions upon listening. Enjoy.

Oh mylanta, the letter J. Unfortunately for me, five of my absolute favorite guitarists' names start with J. Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, John Petrucci, John Frusciante, Joe Satriani; how do you choose just one from a veritable pantheon of guitar gods? I'm just going to have to go with my gut instinct and provide the most superb album out of all the choices possible. John Frusciante's The Empyrean is a beautiful, moving album. With soaring guitar and sensuous vocals, the album paints an image in your mind, inviting you to ponder life and it's mysteries. I'm very, very happy that Frusciante managed to defeat his heroin addiction, as he is a wonderful guitarist and a very deep, emotional person who knows how to create music that can convey his message perfectly. Enjoy in the dark.

The letter I. Iron & Wine, quintessential coffee house music. It's as simple as that. Around the Well is a collection of B-sides and rarities, released in 2009. I still prefer The Shepherd's Dog over all the other Iron & Wine albums (and there are alot), but really any song by Samuel Beam is good. The music is extremely relaxing and coaxes memories of rainy days spent snuggled up in a blanket with a warm mug of coffee. Enjoy the most mellow band out there, Iron & Wine.

Hum - You'd Prefer An Astronaut

Unfortunately I'm stuck finishing up a rather asinine essay for English this evening, some trite dissertation on character building and what not, so I'll keep this brief. The letter H admittedly has a limited choice of bands to choose from, but there is one group that I tend to gravitate towards. Hum, an alternative rock band from the 90's is very enjoyable. I once saw their sound labeled as 'space rock', and it fits perfectly for some of the songs. I realize alternative rock is a very broad genre, but Hum is really indescribable, you just have to listen.

Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest

If you've been listening to indie rock for any amount of time, you have most likely heard of the Brooklyn-based group Grizzly Bear. They released a new album this year, Veckatimest, and I must say, it's quite good. The most interesting thing about Grizzly Bear is the use of acoustic guitar and traditional instruments in conjunction with electronic elements. This creates a unique sound that is quite appealing. The vocals harmonize well, but never quite get as in depth as I would like. While the album is very good, it does tend to blend in with the plethora of indie bands currently out there, yet sound different at the same time, if you follow my thinking. The 'indie' elements are traditional indie, and the saving grace of the band is it's electronic elements. Veckatimest is a unique experience, and for that reason Grizzly Bear is my pick for the letter G.

With the letter F there can be only one choice, Fleet Foxes. Fleet Foxes is currently my favorite band and words just can't describe the beauty and composition of the music. I don't have a favorite song because I love all of them. It would be very difficult for me to nitpick and try to find faults in the music. The only thing that I could fuss about is this; I have three albums, and wikipedia claims there are only two. This is quite interesting to me, but frustrating at the same time because I don't know if I have their songs misplaced or not. This album has the correct tracklisting, so please give it a listen.

Earthless - Rhythms From A Cosmic Sky

Earthless, the epitome of instrumental psychadelic rock, is the offering for the letter E. They are a superbly talented band and the music drives hard with enough variation to keep you interested throughout the album. Rhythms From A Cosmic Sky, their 2007 release, only has 3 tracks, but each one is superb in it's own right. Godspeed kicks off the album with a 21 minute long epic of searing guitar and pounding drums, and the momentum keeps up for the remainder of the album. All of the instruments are played exceedingly well, and the band members of Earthless are obviously very adept musicians. So give it a listen and enjoy the pick for the letter E.

I was excited for the update for the letter D because I get to plug one of my favorite bands, Deerhunter. Deerhunter is a superb band. They are very atmospheric and the layering on the tracks is very well done to create such a fluid, lush environment within the music. Now for something a little different. I realize I've been posting a lot of indie lately, so let's switch it up a little bit. For the next 14 days I will post a wide sample of my music library. Every day will have a new album, and hopefully a new genre. The albums will all be of my favorite artists, they may not be as 'underground' or hard to find as most of the stuff you listen to, but it will be of the utmost quality, I assure you. So, yay for that, and here's my favorite electronic band. Very similar to The Killers, but with enough mojo and variation to set themselves apart from the crowd, Cut Copy manages to woo me over with their unique, catchy lyrics and rhythms. This is quite a feat, since I usually don't enjoy techno/electronica. Enjoy this little break from the pretentiousness for the next two weeks, and kick off the party with Cut Copy.

Arctic Monkeys - Humbug

I enjoy the Arctic Monkeys. A lot. Maybe even too much. Since I've been listening to them quite frequently throughout this past week I've decided to give others a chance to listen to this exceptional band. I think I partake in the Arctic Monkeys so often because they just don't sound like anything else that I have. Maybe I'm just sorely lacking on Brit Rock, but so it goes. Some individuals have touted this album as 'album of the year', but I'm not sure I agree. It is very good, but the year isn't quite over yet, who knows what other goodness we could see. Mew - No More Stories Are Told Today, I'm Sorry, They Washed Away

I'm afraid I'm extremely poor, I actually don't even have one dollar. I would love to be able to sell some t-shirts with album covers on them for profit, but unfortunately America has all these 'copyright laws' and nonsense. It's a damn shame, because some of these covers would look magnificent on a solid color tee, and these indie bands are well...indie, so they don't market themselves at all. Perhaps if I can find some other way for my dear readers to proclaim their musical dominance over others I'll post it up, but for now I'll wallow in my pity. This is economy is brutal my friends.

In the meantime, enjoy some Mew. They're Danish, and refer to themselves as "pretentious art rock", so it's right on the money for what most hipsters are listening to. If I had to describe the sound, I would say indie with a dash of electronica and prog thrown in some of the tracks. Good stuff, doesn't exactly jump out of the crowd as far as uniqueness and re-listenability (not a real word obviously) but they are a solid band. Mew also wins the award for "Longest Album Title" in my library.

Dutch Uncles - S/T

The Dutch Uncles are a very interesting band. They just have such a unique sound, they don't really come close to resembling any other group. Classified as 'alternative/jazz', I think of Dutch Uncles as Indie Rock but with greater technical proficiency of the instruments and a generally tighter focus on the structure of the song. There is a very relaxed, confident feel to the tracks and it's quite unique. Dutch Uncles are a great band, give them a listen.

Death From Above 1979 - You're a Woman, I'm a Machine

Abrasive and upbeat, Death from Above 1979 is a now split-up 'dance-punk' duo from Toronto, Canada. The beats are solid and enjoyable, the riffs hook you almost immediately, and the vocals are not bad. On several songs the singer's voice tends to grate against the nerves, but that's mostly because I'm just not a big fan of high-pitched, distorted voice. If you go into a lower register, hey it's fine with me, but once you start screaming, yikes.
I imagine that this is the band that most of those stupid 'hardcore' scene bands wish they were. I hesitate to say that last statement, because I'm sure I'll get hate for implying that DFA1979 is hardcore, but in the area where I live all of our 'hardcore' bands pretty much try to sound like a very weak version of this band, but with horrendous breakdowns. There are some hardcore-esque techniques employed in the band's sound, specifically the blast beats in the opening of "Cold War" and the vocal techniques. The strained, 'about-to-have-a-hernia' scream omnipresent in hardcore also makes an appearance in several tracks. Death From Above 1979 is heavy, fast, and fun, a strange combination but it works beautifully.

The variation of instruments, from traditional acoustic guitar to woodwinds like the flute, creates a layering effect that furnishes the band with it's simplistic, yet diverse sound. The band is an interesting throwback to more basic indie, and it's quite refreshing. The vocals are extraordinarily soft and clean, mixing perfectly with the other instruments. Beulah lulls you into relaxation on waves of velvet sound. Very chill. I don't have a favorite song, I just love the whole album.

Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare

I love the Arctic Monkeys. The lyrics are upbeat, nonsensical at times, and completely perfect for the style of music. The bass is loud and fast, the guitar plays a quick tempo in the upper octaves to match the driving rhythm of the bass. The tempo of some tracks becomes so upbeat they are almost ska-like. The band straddles the line between ska and indie and comes away with a unique sound that greatly endears itself to the listener.
The tracks themselves are a very refreshing departure from the mass of singer-songwriters that dominate the indie scene. The Arctic Monkeys seem that realize that music should sound great and be fun and Favourite Worst Nightmare reflects this ideology precisely. One interesting thing I noticed about this album is that as you get farther along, the singer falls deeper and deeper into his British(?) accent. Doesn't really have much to do with the music, it was just a little thing I noticed. My favorite song of the album would have to be "505"

Arcade Fire - Funeral

Arcade Fire is an indie band whose instruments never get very technical, but they keep the beat moving and allow the vocals to leap out of the mix and do their thing. Arcade Fire is reminiscent of the Dirty Projectors and Broken Social Scene in some tracks, specifically in "Neighborhood #2 (Laika)". Funeral is my favorite album of the two that I currently have, the other being Neon Bible. My favorite song out of Funeral is "Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)".

Silversun Pickups - Carnavas

To those that already have this album, bear with me. While this may be a more mainstream indie rock band, I can't overlook such a great group. Silversun Pickups, an indie rock / shoegaze outfit influenced by My Bloody Valentine, Velvet Underground and Sonic Youth, keep me listening with their fuzz-laden rhythm coupled with soaring lyrics. The dichotomy of the two instruments is superb on many tracks and adds another interesting layer to the music. You may feel a little gay listening to this album the first time through. Do not be alarmed. This is the typical response to singer Brian Aubert's breathy, cheesy vocal style.

He really lays it on thick in the band's newest album, Swoon so be aware of that. After you adapt to the sleazy voice, the music becomes quite enjoyable. It is pure fuzz catchiness. My favorite song from this album is the famous single, "Lazy Eye"

Dinosaur Jr. - Farm

Dinosaur Jr. hits you hard from the get-go. The sound of this band can accurately be described a "wall of Marshall-driven guitar". This heavy, classic guitar playing is propelled by the efforts of the bassist and drummer, who keep a tight rhythm flowing behind the more technical guitar parts. This is a really great band if you just want some 'rawk' to put on the stereo. Dinosaur Jr. takes the classic, Marshall sound and uses classic rock theory at times, yet also updates the rock image and sound in a way that I've never heard from any other band. The music is very refreshing. My favorite song out of the new album, Farm is "See You".

Delving into Deerhunter

Deerhunter is an absolutely amazing post rock/indie rock band. I recently downloaded Cryptograms and I love it. The tracks are spacey and create an astoundingly lush, vibrant atmosphere. Although the singer, Bradford Cox, a sufferer of Marfan syndrome, is one of the goofiest looking guys around, he has a great set of pipes and the vocals enhance the atmosphere and lull you into complacency. The reverb and delay saturated guitar creates a platform for the music in which the bass and vocals seem to take a leading role on the majority of the tracks. This is especially obvious in my favorite song, "Spring Hall Convert". One of the band's major influences is My Bloody Valentine, so if you are interested in that sort of post-rock/shoe gaze sound, this band definitely provides in that aspect.

An Exploration Of Indie: Part Two

Alright, so it's been quite a while since I've posted last. I've delayed the post mostly because I'm just really lazy, but I guess we can just say I've been 'analyzing' the music. Yeah that sounds better than 'I was too busy playing guitar and vegetating in front of the TV'. So now we embark once again on our exploration of the magnificent and extensive genre that we know simple as 'Indie'. Anyways, last time we stopped with Broken Social Scene, an amazing band, so without further ado we shall start with Circulatory System.

Circulatory System - Circulatory System

Circulatory System is interesting. They have a unique sound that is more low-fi and abstract than most other indie rock bands. The singer's voice is soft and soothing and provides wonderful companionship to the odd, fuzz-laced guitar tracks. In addition to the usual rock-band lineup of instruments (guitar, bass, vocals, drums), Circulatory System adds a wide variety of noises and instruments to create a busy, atmospheric background on which to lay their music. The tracks are full, but not quite lush, with sound and rather abrasive in some qualities, yet still enjoyable. This band would probably be a lot better on certain mind-altering substances, as most bands that aim for a very atmospheric sound tend to be.

Crystal Antlers - Tentacles

Crystal Antlers is a surprisingly noise-rock oriented band. Based on the bright, warm colors of the album cover I was expecting some mellow, acoustic-rock but the true sound of the band is a pleasant surprise. The vocalists unintelligible lyrics preside over a smooth layer of fuzz coming from the guitar and bass. The organ, a surprisingly prominent instrument in this band, seems to play much more of a lead role than the guitar in some songs, especially in the opening track, "Painless Sleep", in which the organ skips over itself in the same method that Ratatat often uses. Overall this is a good album, and once you get past first half of the album, the songs diverse from the format used in earlier tracks and you really get a sense of the music the band is capable of forging within their wailing vocals, organs, and guitars. My favorite song is the turning point of the album, "Andrew".

The Decemberists - The Hazards of Love

The album originally meant to be a musical is great if you love bands with extraordinary amounts of vocals. However, I, never one to be able to follow vocals in my head, find this album quite boring. Despite my boredom with some tracks there are still a few gems, and listening to the album in it's entirety is quite powerful since all the tracks flow seamlessly into each other to create a vast tapestry of sound and story. For those people who listen to bands for the riffs (that's me for sure) and don't care too much if the vocals create a vast, interweaving story, or if they just create nice harmony, this is not the band for you. The Decemberists have created a capacious story and atmosphere with their lyrics, but like I said, I have trouble keeping track of lyrics so they effect is lost on me. This is a decent album nonetheless. My favorite track is "Won't Want For Love", the point in which the female character, Margaret, enters the story.

Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca

Creating lush effects with guitar and vocal melodies sets apart Dirty Projectors from the pack. They have a upbeat, cheery, unique sound, and the vocals are amazing. I especially like the phrase, "It hits the spot, like Gatorade". Out of my recent downloads, this is my second favorite band of the bunch. They do what they do, chill rock with well-executed lyrics and vocals, extremely well. Download this album! My favorite song probably has to be "Temecula", or "The Bride", or maybe just the whole album.

Alright, I can't help but talk about this. I recently bought an HP Mini Netbook and oh man do I love this thing. It's portability is astounding. It's smaller than a textbook and only an inch or so thick. Even though it is so small, it still has a 160gig hard drive, 1gb of memory, and an HD sound card. It is perfect for surfing the web and listening to music. Since that's really all I do anymore (besides the occasional fragfest of QuakeLive), it is perfect for me. I didn't have access to a computer of my own all summer and now that I have one it's just so liberating. Yeah this doesn't have much to do with music, but I felt like I had to plug this thing, since it's now the machine I will be doing all my (hopefully more frequent) blogs on.

Exploration of Indie; Part One

Having browsed several discussion boards, and thoroughly listened to my previous selections, I have downloaded some new music. I took the music I mentioned in my previous posting An Introduction to Indie and analyzed the features of the bands that I liked most out of the ones mentioned. I realized the aspects I most liked was the chill, relaxed feel of the bands coupled with well-thought out lyrics and atmosphere created by the instruments. Based on these features I gathered some new bands and decided to give them a listen since I had considerable free time on my flights to and from Boulder, Colorado. I was also given some help in my selections by my dorm roommate who turned out to have very similar musical taste. As I am often compelled to do when faced with a large number of new artists at once, I shall go through the new bands alphabetically.

The Antlers - Hospice

The dreamy lyrics and spacey guitar really creates a lush atmosphere throughout the whole album. Sometimes the lyrics are a little weird, specifically in "Kettering" where it feels like the singer is whispering into your ear. Apparently the lyrics tell a "epic storyline" of a man losing a loved one to cancer and having to watch her die, but I would never have been able to tell you that without Wikipedia. The lyrics tend to run together in this singer's whispery voice, but I've never really been one to really listen to lyrics either, so that probably didn't help. The majority of the songs are quite slow and ambient, but the tempo picks up in "Bear" and "Two". Overall this is a splendid album for just sitting and chilling as it is very relaxing and atmospheric, however I can't see myself listening to this very often. My favorite song from this album is "Bear".

Bibio - Ambivalence Avenue

This is a very interesting album. The musicianship and composition is superb. The focus is not really on vocals, but on creating a unique layer of instruments and sound that is very different and never gets too "weird" like some other bands I can think of *coughofmontrealcough*. I really like this album and I think everyone should listen to it. My favorite song is probably the opening track, "Ambivalence Avenue" followed closely by "Haikuesque".

Broken Social Scene - Broken Social Scene

I love this band. They are incredibly talented and the music is very fresh and lush. I first listened to Broken Social Scene after the urging of my roommate at the Boulder Running Camp, Forrest. I was on a bus headed out over the rolling plains of Colorado, with the mountains behind us and the sky beautifully azure. The song "Our Faces Split the Coast In Half" came on and I was stunned. It fit the scenery perfectly and then the rest of the album just fell into place exactly as it should. This is a stupendous album for traveling, as the quick tempo on some songs fits with the motion of a car or bus and the slower songs allow for contemplation of your surroundings. This is a wonderful band and I look forward to downloading some of their other albums. My favorite song is the opening track "Our Faces Split the Coast in Half".

Chickenfoot - Self Titled

All in all, Chickenfoot's debut album is disappointing

I was pretty excited for this band seeing as it feature my IDOL, Joe Satriani. However awesome Satch's playing may be in this band, it in no way makes up for the atrocities that Sammy Hagar commits upon my eardrums.

The band members gave Hagar way too much control over the sound in my opinion, far too many of the songs just sound like Van Halen minus the actual Van Halen. Some of the songs are pretty good though, and I now that I think about it, the music they make is really the only way that they could incorporate Hagar's vocals, if that makes sense.

This album will sell very well to Hagar nuts.

Satch fans beware when buying, this is not another compilation of complex guitar-wankery, it is more hard rock/rock/modern rock. Pretty bland overall. Luckily there are lots of blistering, octave-shattering whammy screams thrown in several of the songs. I think we can all agree that Satch has perfected that little technique, and I don't know about you but I love to pull one of those off after you've played a nice little riff.

I would be in heaven if the band took their music in a more blues-oriented direction for their next album(if they make one), as Satch and Chad could just join up and make masterful tunes, and if Hagar could tone it down a little to make it sound like hes NOT about to have a hernia with every syllable, it would be some bomb-ass music.

Avenida Revolution: The decision to start the album is pretty bold in my opinion. It really projects a hard-rocking image and the band firmly cements their musical style in your mind. Seeing as I have a major interest in anything involving Joe Satriani, I really love how the guitar takes a pretty major role in the song. Around 1:45 we get a good signature Satch whammy trick. The solo however, is pretty tame compared to pieces in Satriani's early career. I assume that Satch is holding back on his guitar work in order to attract focus off of the guitar and onto the other members and elements of the band. The guitar doesn't overwhelm the mix, and when listening to this album, I have to do it from the perspective of one who hasn't already been influenced by Satriani's earlier work to the extreme extent I have. As an impartial listener, it's very refreshing to be able to clearly hear each individual element of the band with minimal confusion.

Soap on a Rope: Pretty good song. One might think this song, with it's increased energy and ability to become a more popular song, would be placed first in the album track list. However, in several sections of the song, in which the vocals and guitar harmonize, with the vocalist increasing in pitch over an artificial harmonic being played by the guitar sound almost exactly like a Van Halen song. Even with that small flaw, this song more than makes up with Chad Smith's drumming, a loose, relaxed, and fun drum beat makes the song very lively and fun. Satriani also gives a much better solo in this song, very reminiscent of his solo work. Overall it's a good song, with an interesting composition, and it's fun to try and find all the moment's when you are vividly reminded of Van Halen. There's quite a few.

Sexy Little Thing: This song is a little weird, and is sounds even more like Van Halen than Soap. Probably one of my least favorite songs on the album. I enjoyed Satch's bluesy solo however short it may have been. Too many times I just find myself wishing they hadn't given Hagar so much creative control over the band. Like I stated on my other blog, Satch and Smith should just grab Flea or Geddy Lee or someone awesome like that and make an awesome instrumental funk/blues band.

Oh Yeah: The intro on this song guarantees to make your head bob, and you really realize why the song has the title that it does. The rhythm just makes you wanna say "oh yeah" as your head bobs. Pretty neat little rhythm, and Hagar screeches over in segments that are completely over the top with a chorus shouting "OH!" "YEAH!" Really cool little buildup and transition between sections of the song at 2:30 leads into a nice little solo, and sets you up to be assailed once more by the chorus and Hagar wailing into the microphone.

"Runnin' Out": This song is pretty funny because I actually enjoy Hagar's vocals in this song. It's just so funny to image him as a flamboyant black man dancing around, big lips flapping and belting out the lyrics, as that is the image that is strongly conveyed to me when I listen to him sing.

Get It Up: Satriani almost certainly had most, if not all, creative control on this song. The style and feel of the song just oozes of Satch's more experimental work, such as Strange Beautiful Music This song also has a great section where two guitars solo off Sf one another. This is an ideal song to play with a guest guitar player, seeing as Satch is the only official guitar player. This is very exciting for guitar aficionados, because a guest guitar player for a band with Satch in it has to have some skills for sure, and this gives other G3 members a chance feature in tours and plug their band, and for Chickenfoot to get a chance to play at guitar clinics and festivals such as NAMM, G3, etc. One of my favorite songs on the album.

Down the Drain: A sinister intro builds up into another upbeat, classic song invoking memories of Van Halen. However, this song takes the classic sound and really modernizes everything with Satch's unique phrasing and technique. The more modern guitar contrasted with Hagar's very classic vocals gives the song a very unique feel.

My Kinda Girl: I did not like this song. It just feels stale and very boring.

Learning to Fall: Obviously meant to be a ballad, this song falls far short once Hagar's voice starts grating irritably against your brain, which happens to be when he first begins singing. You might as well skip this track.

Turning Left: A much welcome reprieve after the abomination of Learning to Fall is Turning Left. The guitar drives a tight, fast rythm and keeps the song moving. Another one of my favorites.

Future is the Past: Funky song, pretty dang cool. This is another one of Hagar's good moments, and another song in which I visualize him as someone else. This song would be great live, it seems like it could really get a crowd pumped up. This is also another song that would be able to incorporate a guest guitarist. With a guest guitarist and Satch play solos off one another and if they did a little improvisation for a few minutes thrown in about halfway, this song would be extremely effective and popular in a live setting.

Bitten By the Wolf: Acoustic song. Fun to listen to and puts the spotlight on Hagar, who does a great job on this song.

Overall, I have to give this album a 6/10 because it does what it set out to do. That is, it takes the classic rock sound and kicks it into overdrive, really modernizing the sound into something quite unique.

An Introduction to "Indie"

This summer I have devoted a vast majority of my time to discovering new music. My tastes have evolved over this relatively short period of time from mostly metal such as Opeth and technical virtuosos such as Satriani, Gilbert and Vai to the vast and mysterious genre known as "Indie". This has been prompted by several things, mostly my preference for more chill, relaxing music to help fit the feel of summer, but also the online music community. These online communities are filled to the brim with the strange creature known as the "hipster".

You may have seen one of these majestic beasts in the wild, as they frequent such places as Starbucks and your local music venue. Generally this hipsters can be identified by their attire, consisting of faded slim cut jeans; solid color high thread count fitted shirt; vans slip-ons or even converse; a fashionable beanie or fedora; trendy square or oval glasses; and most distinctly, the cup of coffee clenched in one hand and the macbook gently dangling from the other. As the accoutrements of the 'hipster' and the 'scene kid' blend ever so closely together, you may find it harder to distinguish one paragon of distinct taste from another. Whilst the scene kid may find their calling in discovering the most horrendous cacophony of noise and breakdowns to force down the throats of society, the hipster devotes himself to finding the most obscure, indie-as-fuck bands and songwriters possible. God forbid you actually engage the hipster in a discussion on music (which, if you were foolish enough to talk to the hipster unprovoked, will be the only topic of discussion) for you will soon be bombarded by a twisting, convoluted listing of bands and genres that you have never heard of and will probably never hear of again. You may be regalled with tales of "That one amazing band that only put out 10 casettes and is considered to be the pinnacle of indie musicianship, but you probably wouldn't get it.", and mired by his undisguised hostility and sense of superiority.

If you should find yourself in a state of mind to continue this innane conversation, you may mention any of the following bands to earn the hipster's undying contempt and hopefully appall him to such an extent that he will consider himself unable to enlighten you to the perfection that is his musical taste. Any hardcore, classic rock(dad rock), or metal(and any variations) will cause the hipster to weep into his caramel macchiato.

However, a very curious thing occurs if you mention the band Neutral Milk Hotel. Either the hipster will recoil in incredulous hosility and disgust, or you will earn his begrudging approval. You may have better luck in earning the hipster's respect by smashing random words together and saying "Oh, well I'm not suprised you don't know who they are, they're pretty underground." This tactic may be dangerous because the hipster may challenge you to an obscure band shootout, which you may not even know you are participating in.

Anyways, back to the original point of this post. I have been enjoying what you would call "Entry-Level" indie lately, as the more underground and obscure bands are often too boring, whiny, or just plain indie-as-fuck for me to enjoy.
Beck, which is pretty mainstream actually, is very enjoyable and easy to get into.

Neutral Milk Hotel is also enjoyable in it's listenability and catchy songs. In the Airplane Over the Sea is the easiest to get into, while On Avery Island is more abstract and indie, but a better album in my opinion.

Eels is decent, but I think it may be a little to indie for my tastes. Some of the songs are set up in such a way that it distorts the recording, and I did not find that enjoyable at all. The only album I've had the chance to listen to is Hombre Lobo, so perhaps some of his other albums are more enjoyable. The saving grace for Eels is the variety of the music, and that awesome beard.

Iron & Wine has to be my favorite band right now. The beauty of the songs and melodies are just astounding, and there really isn't a song that I don't enjoy on Shepherd's Dog. I recommend this to anyone who is interested in some cool, chill music.

Kasabian is a great band, I downloaded both Empire and West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum. WRPLA is a far superior album and very enjoyable. A few of the songs are quite reminiscent of Oasis in the musical and vocal style.

Modest Mouse's Good News for People Who Love Bad News propelled them into the spotlight, but their older albums are much more experimental and interesting, worth a listen at least. The albums are riddled with some pretty bad filler tracks, but every now and then there is a jem.

Ever since I heard them in Barnes and Noble, I hesitate to say this, but I really enjoy The Silversun Pickups. They recently came out with their sophomore album Swoon, but I think their first album Carnavas is much better.

So there you have it, what I've been listening to lately in the genre of "Indie". I realize it is all quite 'entry-level', but what can I say, I'm just starting. All the bands are quite lax on the technical side for guitar, but I still get my Satch fix so don't worry.

It is interesting, I believe, to ponder upon the origins of the world, humans, the universe as a whole. For can anyone truly understand what is happening and what has occured?

Take for instance the fact that our brains grew from bacteria. Yet, even as our origins were something so formless, we all conform to specific molds and ideals within our race. We all have arms, legs, heads, skin. We all have generally the same skin color(none of us are purple and blue). We all perceive light, sound, feelings to some degree of similiarity. Our brains have evolved to sense the random particles of electricy hurtling towards our bared retinas as images and colors. Likewise, the tiniest bones and muscles in our body have developed within an organic auditorium to interpret vibrations and signals into tangible sounds that our brain then decodes and understands all within the blink of an eye.

We were once bacteria. We once were the mold growing upon rocks, the phytoplanktons en masse upon the vast oceans of a yet unchanged world. Now we have become so incredibly advanced beyond reckoning. To merely type this sentence I have developed motor skills, language use, vision, comprehension of these mysterious symbols on this strange screen of an unknown substance that somehow has been manipulated to take a current of unseen and untangible energy and project light in such precise measurements and angles directly into my eyes. The cones of my retinas flip the image, project it upon my sensory inputs, which then relay these signals, which are merely light and color at this point, to my brain. My brain is efficient and resourceful enough to decode, analyze, understand, and respond to these seemingly insignificant and intangible relays while drawing little to no energy from my body. Nature has somehow programmed each and every human to have the capacity to do these tasks and many more vastly complex activities. Nature must have it's own intelligence. A veritable Matrix, Nature dictates what can and cannot be thought of by mere humans. We cannot comprehend what is beyond our universe. It is mere logic that something should exist, yet how could we know? The truth of the matter is that we cannot, and we never will be able to. We just were not programmed to be able to. Perhaps there are some who would say to me "Yes, well I believe that there are infinite universes including our own". Well, that is a belief and nobody can know for certain obviously.

When we begin to think of the earth and the universe, we understand that everything is made up of atoms and particles of various substances. If there was a "creator" everything in his mind would just be webs and kaliedoscopes of atomic particles, all interweaving. All reacting, combining, splitting apart, fusing, creating the world in a tumultous cacophony of energy and activity. It would be like Neo in the Matrix, when he sees the world as it truly is, algorithms. We are all composed of the same things, you and I. If I were to be drawn upon a sheet, merely with atoms and particles, my vast web would be very, very similar to yours. Even if we have radically different attitudes, ideas, souls even, we are the same.

Nothing can come from nothing, The "Prime Mover" is a semantic game for
the weak minded. everything has always been here, and it is only your
narrow perception of the nature of time and existence that leads you to
believe that magical beings are responsible for it all.

Speaking of the soul, no soul truly exists. Our definition of a 'soul' is thus: immaterial part of a person consisting of their thoughts and personality. Yet, is it not true when I say that our 'soul' is just random electrical patterns in our brain? Thusly upon death do we merely disappear in clouds of static and bid adeui to our physical body merely to rest in another receptive individual? Or do we merely cease to exist? Do we go cold and dead in the lifeless blob of matter ensconced in our skulls, never to think, breathe, or love again?

Let's not even bring dreams into the question. The depths of complexity involving our brain are fathomless and incomprehensible.

The mind is truly an amazing thing. Merely to try and comprehend modern technology is far beyond my limits. It is beyond my wildest dreams to even begin to understand how someone developed this monitor. To provide such images to such a precise and consistent scale is a feat worth of a God, truly. Take a moment and think about your iPhone, your computer, your cell phone that you incessantly tinker with. If I were to task you to build these items with materials completely from the Earth, where would you even begin? Nobody can truly know, yet these things have been accomplished and even more astounding technological events occur each and every day.

"The greatest mystery the universe offers is not life
but size. Size encompasses life, and the Tower encompasses size. The
child, who is most at home with wonder, says: Daddy, what is above the
sky? And the father says: The darkness of space. The child: What is
beyond space? The father: The galaxy. The child: Beyond the galaxy? The
father: Another galaxy. The child: Beyond the other galaxies? The
father: No one knows.

"You see? Size defeats us. For the fish,
the lake in which he lives is the universe. What does the fish think
when he is jerked up by the mouth through the silver limits of
existence and into a new universe where the air drowns him and the
light is blue madness? Where huge bipeds with no gills stuff it into a
suffocating box abd cover it with wet weeds to die?

"Or one might
take the tip of the pencil and magnify it. One reaches the point where
a stunning realization strikes home: The pencil tip is not solid; it is
composed of atoms which whirl and revolve like a trillion demon
planets. What seems solid to us is actually only a loose net held
together by gravity. Viewed at their actual size, the distances between
these atoms might become league, gulfs, aeons. The atoms themselves are
composed of nuclei and revolving protons and electrons. One may step
down further to subatomic particles. And then to what? Tachyons?
Nothing? Of course not. Everything in the universe denies nothing; to
suggest an ending is the one absurdity.

"If you fell outward to
the limit of the universe, would you find a board fence and signs
reading DEAD END? No. You might find something hard and rounded, as the
chick must see the egg from the inside. And if you should peck through
the shell (or find a door), what great and torrential light might shine
through your opening at the end of space? Might you look through and
discover our entire universe is but part of one atom on a blade of
grass? Might you be forced to think that by burning a twig you
incinerate an eternity of eternities? That existence rises not to one
infinite but to an infinity of them?

"Perhaps you saw what place
our universe plays in the scheme of things - as no more than an atom in
a blade of grass. Could it be that everything we can perceive, from the
microscopic virus to the distant Horsehead Nebula, is contained in one
blade of grass that may have existed for only a single season in an
alien time-flow? What if that blade should be cut off by a scythe? When
it begins to die, would the rot seep into our universe and our own
lives, turning everthing yellow and brown and desiccated? Perhaps it's
already begun to happen. We say the world has moved on; maybe we really
mean that it has begun to dry up.

"Think how small such a concept
of things make us, gunslinger! If a God watches over it all, does He
actually mete out justice for such a race of gnats? Does His eye see
the sparrow fall when the sparrow is less than a speck of hydrogen
floating disconnected in the depth of space? And if He does see... what
must the nature of such a God be? Where does He live? How is it
possible to live beyond infinity?

"Imagine the sand of the
Mohaine Desert, which you crossed to find me, and imagine a trillion
universes - not worlds by universes - encapsulated in each grain of
that desert; and within each universe an infinity of others. We tower
over these universes from our pitiful grass vantage point; with one
swing of your boot you may knock a billion billion worlds flying off
into darkness, a chain never to be completed.

We only use 10% of our brain.
It is fact that different parts of the brain are used for different things, so therefore we are only using 10% of the whole brain at any given time, thusly recieving an astoundingly vast array of input. To use 100% of your brain would mean to experience every memory, feeling, emotion, taste, smell, sound, etc all at the same time. If this were somehow possible, would this not destroy a man instantly? Would not their head explode from the mind-boggling amount of information all at once overloading his organic circuits? Once again, we can never know.

What we call "reality" is actually an image our consciousness
constructs from outside sensus. Because this process takes time, the
"reality" we experience is actually a memory, an image of things that
our mind claims are happening "now". When we dream, we sense an image
of things that our mind claims are happening "now".

My superhero name would be Aqualad. My costume would be a giant
fish suit. I would travel the globe with my powers of flight and my
ability to use people as waterskis. Upon reaching my
destination I would then find corrupt leaders and evildoers and soak
them with my water-rays. Nobody enjoys being wet. Undoubtably these
evildoers will feel shamed and ridiculous, they are wet, nobody else is

Mastodon - Crack The Skye

Time for something interesting - MUSIC. I'll be completely honest, I don't enjoy or even tolerate most the music that most students listen to these days. Diversity is the spice of life. Music is a teenager's life. Therefore, variety in your music allows you to become a more diverse, interesting, and all around awesome person. Let's begin.

Mastodon is undoubtably one of the more underrated metal bands around right now. Their discography spans various elements and themes and contains some quite brilliant guitar and vocal work. The drummer blasts out mind-boggling fills and amazes me constantly. Mastodon's Crack the Skye continues the legacy of albums that represent elements and feature magnificent cover artwork. Leviathan is quintessentially the water element, Blood Mountain subsists of earth themes, Remission is loosely based on fire, and finally Crack the Skye embodies a distinctly Airy, Astral essence. Call of the Mastodon, a collection of demo songs, is a mix of fire and water and the result is a sludgy, aggressive, and raw anthology of past sounds. Beginning with Call of the Mastodon and moving chronologically through the discography, you will be amazed at the evolution of sound and technique that the band has gone through. This evolution has culminated in the band's most polished and technical album yet. The most recent Guitar World has an article that goes into the technical recording and layering aspect of the album more in depth, so I won't go over that here.

Crack the Skye, give it a listen. Who knows, you may discover a new favorite band.

Expect a review of each song off of Crack the Skye this week and reviews/insights upon various other albums in a broad range of bands every week or so afterwards.

Now for the aforementioned and promised review:

Oblivion: The album starts off with a distinctly "Mastodon" sound. The alternating low notes with those on the higher strings give a spacy, drifting feeling unique to the band. Par for the course, vocals are completely unintelligible, yet they are quite powerful and haunting for the entirety of the album. Particular in the first few minutes the vocals shine. The words that you can make out from time to time provide a very lonely and lamenting sense to the song. These lyrics coupled with the wailing guitar work starting around 3:30 paint a barren, distinctly Eastern European, atmosphere. I'm not fond of the way this song ends if you are listening to it on shuffle or by itself, but when in conjuction with the remainder of the album it provides a nice transition.

Quintessence: It took me a while to notice the song had changed, the transition to this song from Oblivion was so smooth. Once again we have a Mastodon-esque sound coupled with the nasally vocals that are so unique and refreshing. I love the way the singer includes such variety in this song. The guitar is pretty typical of Mastodon in Quintessence; one guitar chugs along in contrast with another playing single notes that float along over the top. Although typical, the guitar work is very heavy and enjoyable. The drums are blasting out some pretty decent fills, yet I feel like they take a backseat to the vocals until the end of the song. Around 4:00 the drummer seems to kick it up a notch and start hammering away at your soul with absolute precision.

The Czar: The song starts out beautifully; the slow bass coupled with airy guitar excels at creating a magnificent atmosphere. The haunting vocals speak of escape from unknown horrors that allows the mind to wander and vividly takes the listener to a barren, snowswept land of tryanny. Keyboards are prominent from 2:-- onwards and smoothly create even more depth to this tapestry of imagination that the song coaxes forth. An effortless transition occurs at 3:40 from tale-telling to an formidable guitar riff. The tempo picks up a bit and the guitar work starts getting really good; very impressive detuned chugging alternating with some sweet technical riffs. The vocals weave in and out pitch with the guitar, giving a really nifty feeling. At 7:00 the tempo shifts yet again into a haunting melody reminiscent of the same themes as the beginning. The vocals, keyboards, guitar, and drums all coalesce into perhaps the most beautifully written and put together portion of the album for the remainder of the song. Although, the solo is a little unsatisifying. The outstanding composition more than makes up for this slight imperfection.

Ghost of Karelia: Drums are immediately noticed as more prominent than in previous songs and they remain so for the entirety of the song. The vocals have their shining moments, and although they are definetely not my favorite, they still remain proficient at what they do; conjure up astounding imagery. Guitars take a backseat until about halfway through when a magnificently heavy, detuned riff comes along and bashes heads for a few minutes before transitioning into yet more stratospheric upper octave work.

Crack the Skye: The track from which the album is titled after begins with suprisingly similarity to the other tracks, yet moves onto a distinctly unique tone and feel. Vocals soar in Crack the Skye, drums pound, guitars slay; yet all this begins to feel a bit stretched and repetitive. The song is simply too similar to the others until about 2:45 in which a single guitar wails over the hammering drums and recaptures the listener for a few minutes before the song transitions. The drums in the latter half of the song are simply brilliant, I don't know how the drummer does it.

The Last Baron: The Last Baron is by far my favorite song. The track immediately begins where Crack the Skye left off, providing a sublime transition that holds the listeners attention whilst the nasally vocals provide a excellent buildup to what may be my favorite riff of the year. The way the singer manipulates his voice in the first few minutes is simply magnificent and he soars above what you believe is possible for a typical "metal" singer. The guitars come in at 2:20 with a cutting, hard-driving riff, relax for a few seconds, then melt your face off. Drums like you have never heard before begin at 3:00, once again the drummer is proving his mastery over his instrument. My mind is blown simply trying to comprehend how he controls his motions to strike the seperate sections with the precision and speed at which he does. Amazing. Keyboards are used sparingly in The Last Baron, and unfortunately when you do hear them they are cliche "ahs" and are very disappointing. However, the cliche does little to detract from the overall song. At 5:45 a twisting-winding, ridiculously out-of-place little transition beings, yet for its sticking out like a sore thumb, it fits. I realize this makes little sense, I guess it must be heard to be understood. Furious drumming and guitar riffs consist of the next few minutes, punctuated consistently by keyboards and lamenting lyrics. Beginning at 8:00 is my favorite riff of the album, the strikingly playful yet heavy sound is absolutely marvelous.

Divinations: Divinations begins with a serpentine guitar twisting underneath ridiculously complex drums, transitioning into a overwhelmingly moving riff coupled with aggressive vocals that I have come to love and expect from the vocalist. This track won't disappoint those listeners looking for a technical, aggressive song for 'rawking out man'.

There are also instrumental versions of Oblivion and Divinations. I actually enjoyed the instrumental version of Oblivion more than the original.
